NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A trash company official has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for conspiring to launder money.

Federal prosecutors said 72-year-old Thomas Milo of Mamaroneck, N.Y., was sentenced Tuesday in New Haven and ordered to pay a $40,000 fine.

Authorities say Milo admitted he was a silent partner of James Galante’s numerous trash hauling companies.

Prosecutors said Milo and others agreed to pay about $120,000 annually to alleged Genovese crime family boss Matthew “Matty the Horse” Ianniello of New York in exchange for mob muscle to stifle competition.

Thirty-three individuals, including Galante and Ianniello, have pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from a long-term investigation into the waste-hauling industry in Connecticut and eastern New York.
