A vital witness who lied at a gangland murder trial has been spared a jail sentence because a senior police officer spoke up for him.
Judges were told that sending John Corkish, 46, to prison could harm the witness protection scheme by deterring others from helping police. Corkish – who now has a new identity and a new address – gave key evidence against assassins James MacDonald and Raymond Anderson senior when they stood trial for gunning down underworld rival Michael Lyons, 21, in December 2006.
