Boston Irish Winter Hill Gang boss James “Whitey” Bulger’s world is now an 8-by-12-foot cell in Unit G, the maximum security section of the Plymouth County Correctional Facility, where inmates are locked up for 23 hours a day.

Built in 1994, the 1,600-inmate hoosegow on Long Pond Road — the largest prison facility under one roof in Massachusetts — houses a mix of county, state and federal prisoners, including accused terrorists and tax cheats.

Plymouth officials said U.S. Marshals have gagged them from talking about their most- famous inmate.

They have asked not to say anything, not even say that he is there,” said Sara Lavoie, a spokeswoman for the facility.

But a source confirmed that Bulger, due to his high profile as the Hub’s most notorious mobster, will be spending his days awaiting trial in protective custody inside Unit G, known to inmates as “The Hole.”

Among his blockmates is Keith Luke, the Brockton white supremacist who allegedly went on a deadly rampage in 2009 and later showed up in court with a swastika that he carved on his forehead while in his solitary cell.

The maximum-security unit also has housed shoe-bomber Richard Reid and convicted spree killer Gary Sampson, as well as a “Who’s Who” of New England mobsters, including Frank “Cadillac Frank” Salemme and Bulger’s henchman, Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi.  read more Click here: Whitey’s new life as a Unit G-man –
