NY times reports  BOSTON — James (Whitey) Bulger will receive a taxpayer-funded defense lawyer, a federal magistrate judge ruled on Thursday.

Magistrate Judge Marianne B. Bowler appointed J.W. Carney represent Mr. Bulger, the 81-year-old former crime boss who is charged with 19 murders. Prosecutors had argued that Mr. Bulger had family members who could help him pay for his defense.
