A caterer with ties to the Genovese crime family was sentenced Friday to six years in prison for extorting a rival bidder for a Catholic school lunch contract.

Frank (Frankie D) DiMattina was allowed to remain free on $1 million bail pending the outcome of an appeal of his conviction.

DiMattina told Federal Judge Jack Weinstein earlier this week that he was ready to serve his sentence “like a man” and would not let the government break his spirit.

The judge was concerned that ordering DiMattina to begin serving the sentence immediately might jeopardize the jobs of 60 employees of DiMattina’s catering hall, Ariana’s Grand, in Woodbridge, N.J.

Three weeks after DiMattina was convicted in January by a Brooklyn federal jury of threatening a Staten Island caterer at gunpoint over the lunch contract, he was nominated for a “Citizen of the Month” award by a prominent law enforcement group. read more Here
