James “Whitey” Bulger’s public defender will ask a federal judge Tuesday to lift the gag order that’s kept the case under wraps so the court-assigned lawyer can speak freely while preparing for trial, reports Boston Herald

If U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Marianne B. Bowler agrees to attorney J.W. Carney Jr.’s motion, it will let him consult with other professionals on trial strategy such as how best to cross-examine key government witnesses — in particular, Bulger’s former crew of partner Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi, hit man John Martorano and jack-of-all-trades Kevin Weeks.
