Fanella was sentenced by a Rome court to nine years in jail in a case of racketeering and money laundering involving telecommunications companies Telecom Italia Sparkle and Fastweb.
He was a treasurer for Gennaro Mokbel,a big-league businessman who was one of the masterminds of the two-billion-euro Telecom-Fastweb fraud.
The wounded gunman was taken to Gemelli hospital in Rome and arrested on orders of Anti-Mafia prosecutors.
Two other triggermen were seen speeding away from the murder scene said witnesses.
