The former feared ”Boss of Bosses” of the Cosa Nostra is unfit to stand trial, a court ruled on Monday after a medical check-up established his health had deteriorated, reports Ansa News
Bernardo Provenzano, 81, a former super boss of the Sicilian mafia is on trial in Palermo for extortion against a contractor in Agrigento . The trial was suspended and adjourned to June 2015 when a new check-up will determine whether he is mentally fit to stand trial.
Provenzano, nicknamed ”The ‘Bulldozer’ because, in the words of one informant, “he mows people down”, is suffering from Parkinson’s and related disorders and was rushed to hospital earlier this year shortly after he was transferred from Parma to Milan’s Opera prison.
The old mafia warrior is serving life for several murders including ordering fatal bomb attacks on anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992
He was arrested in 2006 after 43 years on the run
