Tom Morello was ecstatic. Not giddy. Not thrilled. Not elated, enthusiastic or really, really excited, even. Ecstatic.

On a Thursday afternoon in his adopted hometown of Los Angeles, Morello found himself in the studio at KLOS—the “Rock of Southern California,” a radio station that has a pile of vintage bumper stickers tattooed with the names of ZZ Top, Van Halen, Billy Idol, and the like stacked inches from the DJ’s microphone—watching one of his idols barrel through one of his favorite songs with one of his comrades in rock.
