Hours before his sudden death at the age of 52, Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell played what would be his final show last night in Detroit. Since the band reunited in 2010 after a 13-year hiatus, Soundgarden performed regularly, seemingly unchanged by time. They retained their raw energy, and, most importantly, Cornell never lost his beautiful and wrenching growl.

The sound that defined grunge music had survived long after the genre had faded into subsequent generations of trends.
