Terrence Caldwell

Gang Land’s Jerry Capeci writes,

They could call it the Bob Marley Defense, as in the great Wailers song covered by Eric Clapton: “I shot the sheriff. But I did not shoot the deputy.”

That was the gist of a stunning opening statement offered to the jury by the lawyer for Terrence Caldwell, the accused triggerman in the 2013 gangland-style slaying of former Purple Gang leader Michael Meldish. Attorney George Goltzer admitted that six months before Meldish was killed, his client had attempted to kill a Bonanno soldier. But he insisted Caldwell wasn’t the one who shot Meldish to death as he sat in the driver’s seat of his car in the Throg’s Neck section of the Bronx.

In a packed courtroom in White Plains Federal Court, Goltzer stated that Caldwell shot gangster Enzo (The Baker) Stagno in May of 2013, as a personal favor for Meldish, a longtime pal. But he added: “We absolutely deny that Ted Caldwell killed Michael Meldish.”
