MILAN, Italy — Anti-Mafia Police in northern Italy have arrested a small town mayor, a banker and a real estate agent on suspicion of Mafia association.

Anti-mafia investigators in Milan said the arrests stemmed from evidence obtained during the major crackdown this summer on the powerful and growing ‘ndrangheta crime syndicate/ Calabrian Mafia — during which more than 300 were arrested.

The three suspects arrested early Thursday are accused of colluding to fix an auction for the right to develop low-income apartments in Borgarello, a town of 2,600 people south of Milan.

Police identified the suspects as 41-year-old Borgarello Mayor Giovanni Valdes, 46-year-old Alfredo Introini, a banker, and 56-year-old Salvatore Paolillo, who works in real estate. The three are alleged to have been working with a local state health official who was arrested in the earlier crackdown. Reports Canadian Press.
