Giovanni Salvatore Riina aka ‘Salvuccio’
Giovanni Salvatore Riina aka “Salvuccio” the son of jailed Sicilian mafia ‘boss of bosses‘ Toto ‘The Beast’ Riina and brother of jailed mob killer Giuseppe Riina–returned home to his mother late Sunday on judges’ orders after serving an eight year and ten month prison term for mafia association, , extortion and money laundering
Shortly before his release from Voghera prison in the northern Lombardy region, Giovanni Salvatore Riina learned that judges ordered him to return to his hometown of Corleone and live with his mother, Ninetta Bagarella.
“He is unwelcome here and his presence is a danger for the community,” commented Corleone’s mayor Antonino Iannazza on Monday.
Thirty-four-year-old Giovanni Riina had hoped to settle in the northern Italian city of Padua under police surveillance and work for a charity there, as a court had earlier ruled. But judges reverted to an earlier decision when Giovanni Riina was jailed that he must return to Corleone.
Giovanni’s 80-year-old father, Toto Riina, was arrested in the Sicilian capital, Palermo, in January 1993, after almost 25 years on the run.
Nicknamed ‘The Beast’ due to his violent nature, or sometimes The Short One due to his diminutive height, Toto Riina is serving multiple life sentences for murders including the 1993 slayings in Palermo of anti-mafia prosecutors Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone
He is believed to have personally killed around 40 people and to have ordered the deaths of several hundred more.
He has heart problems and has been seeking release from prison on health grounds
