Philly mob Underboss Marty angelina
South Philadelphia mob leader Martin Angelina has been indicted by an Atlantic County grand jury for allegedly spitting on a Margate City police officer during a confrontation in September.
The one-count indictment was handed up last week but not made public until today by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Angelina, 47, has been free on $2,500 bail since his arrest on Sept. 1.
He faces a maximum sentence of 18 months in state prison if convicted of the fourth-degree criminal offense, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor James McClain, who presented the case to the grand jury.
No trial date has been set.
The incident is one of several public flaps involving the short-tempered mobster who was jailed twice on parole violations charges after serving 66 months for a racketeering conviction.
Angelina, mob boss Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino and five co-defendants were convicted in August 2001 in a case involving gambling, loansharking, extortion and the receipt of stolen property.
Angelina was described during the trial as an enforcer for Merlino. Among other things, he was charged with threatening a bookmaker with a baseball bat in a dispute over money.
At his sentencing a federal prosecutor called Angelina a “bully running with a gang of misfits.”
Angelina has been described by some law-enforcement sources as the current underboss of the Philadelphia mob, but his high-profile antics have reportedly strained his relationship with alleged mob boss Joseph “Uncle Joe” Ligambi.
Ligambi has taken a low profile since assuming the top spot in the crime family in 1999, authorities say, and has insisted that members of his organization do likewise.
Since his release from prison nearly four years ago, Angelina has been jailed twice for violating the terms of his supervised release; arrested for drunken driving; been a central figure in an internal mob dispute involving loansharking, gambling and death threats; and, in September, charged with spitting on a police officer.
The incident occurred in the Margate Police Station after Angelina had been arrested on a disorderly-person charge stemming from a dispute with a girlfriend with whom he was staying.
Angelina was held in jail for about three hours after his arrest around 6 a.m. He was being released when he got into an altercation with Police Officer Christopher Taroncher and allegedly spit on him.
Angelina was then rearrested and held until posting $2,500 bail.
The one-count indictment accused Angelina of assaulting Taroncher with “bodily fluid.”
Ligambi, Angelina and several other reputed members of the crime family are the targets of an FBI racketeering investigation centered on gambling, loansharking and extortion, according to state and federal law-enforcement sources.
