On a jailhouse recording, defense lawyer Paul W. Bergrin affectionately ended his phone conversation with the imprisoned Abdul Williams by declaring, “All right buddy take care. I love you.”
For his part, Williams in one call gushed, “Paul, you’re one of the best in the world.”
Any trace of that affection was noticeably absent Thursday as the lawyer and the cooperating witness clashed and sparred at Bergrin’s murder and racketeering trial, nearing the end of its fourth week in federal court in Newark.
