CALABRIA

Police in the The Netherlands said Saturday they have arrested a ‘Ndrangheta  mafia  boss who is among Italy’s most dangerous and deadly fugitives

Francesco Nirta, a high-level leader of the ‘Ndrangheta’s Nirta-Strangio clan  from Siderno in Calabria was arrested in an apartment near Utrecht by Dutch police and Interpol agents

The 39-year-old Nirta is a convicted mob killer who has been on the run since 2007 and in 2011 was sentenced in his absence to life in prison for murder and Mafia association

Interpol and Dutch police say they  acted  on a tip from the anti-mafia squad of Reggio Calabria that led them to the apartment where Francesco Nirta lived with four friends. All were arrested and dragged away in handcuffs. Police confiscated cash and cocaine that was found in the flat.

The Nirta-Strangio clan  has been involved  in a  vicious vendetta  feud with the Pelle-Vottari-clan that culminated in the 2007 gangland gundown   slayings  of six men in the western German city of Duisburg, dubbed “The Duisburg massacre” by the press

After the massacre in Duisburg,, other ‘Ndrangheta  mafia bosses supposedly stepped in and  brokered a peace pact between the two warring clans
