Thirty-four members and associates of the Lucchese crime family were indicted on charges of racketeering and other offenses. The indictment is a continuation of Operation Heat, a year-long investigation that culminated in several arrests targeting a $2.2 billion underground gambling operation in 2007.
Edwin Spears, a high-ranking member in the Nine Trey Gangsters set of the Bloods gang and reputed to be an associate of Lucchese organized Crime Family figures, Joseph Perna , and Michael Cetta, is seeking to dismiss an indictment accusing him of smuggling drugs and cell phones into prison.. The five men are among 34 defendants facing indictments accusing them of being part of a Lucchese racketeering operation that allegedly ran an international gambling ring and money laundering during a 15-month period that ended in December 2007.
