Former Chicago police Chief of Detectives William Hanhardt, seen in 2000, has been released from prison to a halfway house on the Near West Side. In 2002, Hanhardt was sentenced to 12 years in prison for running a jewel-theft ring. (Phil Velasquez, Chicago Tribune / July 20, 2011)

 Former mobbed-up Chicago chief of detectives William Hanhardt, who’s name was mentioned in the Outfit Family Secrets  trial,  took a fall for running a jewel-theft ring and after 12 years was released from federal prison.   The hit TV series  Crime Story was based on  the Chicago anti-mob unit headed by William Hanhard.

William Hanhardt, a legendary Chicago cop who rose to chief of detectives only to fall from grace as the head of a crafty crew of mob-connected jewel thieves, was released from federal prison to a halfway house, prison officials said Tuesday.
