PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi needed help getting a car insurance scam up and running, so he turned to the boss.
It was 1967 and Flemmi headed south to Providence for a meeting with powerful mafia don Raymond L.S. Patriarca.
After lunch on the Hill, Patriarca gave Flemmi $5,000 in cash (equivalent to nearly $35,000 today) and some advice: “Patriarca told the informant that he did not want [him] to mention any business dealings that he had with him to the informant’s brother, Jimmy […] because Jimmy could not ‘keep his mouth shut.'”
It was a telling exchange: choose the crime family over your own.
